On Craigslist / EBay as community content portals
EBay is one of the most compelling content platforms on the modern internet. People from all around the world acquire unique and desirable objects, then bring their best photography and storytelling skills to bear on representing these objects.
Buyers sift through the oceans of stale listings in the hope of identifying something fresh, rare and undervalued. When the choice listing is identified, the payoff is more tangible than any mid-viral tweet. It’s rare and undervalued shit.
The content feed is ever compelling, as something fresh, rare and undervalued could be discovered at any moment.
It’s a wonder to me that these surfaces haven’t been better colonized by direct response advertising. EBay has purchase intent, long tail interest, very close to google. Maybe folks on eBay have already dismissed the idea of buying something new.
Why not put a solo stove beside a search for tents or trailer hitches?
